A rather harried dad needed to get some work done at home, but his young son wanted to play with him instead. Dad decided to keep his son busy by cutting up a large picture of the world into small puzzle pieces and letting him put it together while he got his work done.
In a very short time the boy completed the puzzle and wanted dad to play. Stunned and a bit perplexed, the dad looked at the finished picture of the world and asked his son how he had put it together so quickly. He said, “It was easy, Dad. There was a picture of a man on the back. When I put the man together then the world came together.”
All around our troubled, fractured world people crave the peace that was promised millennia ago with the coming of the Prince of Peace. However, the Prince of Peace rules over a kingdom of peace which exists within each human heart. It isn’t a material or mental kingdom. In fact, the material mental realm cannot even comprehend true peace. It is a kingdom of chaos and suffering. One just needs to look around to know that this is true.
Since most of us live from our heads and not from our hearts, we experience a world full of problems, drama, violence and sorrow. We expect nations to communicate and work together; yet in our homes and businesses there is strife and division with even an “off with their heads” attitude in some cases. This is unrealistic, insane behavior.
Einstein said that no problem can be solved by using the same thinking that created it in the first place. Yet that is exactly what the world systems have been attempting to do since the beginning of recorded history. The “go to war to end war” idea is acted out individually and collectively ad nauseum. We could just continue this insanity for another 1,000 years, or we could actually summon the courage to tap into the kingdom within that is always in peace.
The power of the peace that is in the human heart is mightier than any mega bomb. We have experienced this power from those who have lived inside out from the heart. Well known peacemakers such as Mother Theresa, Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Jr., Helen Keller, are a few examples. We discount ourselves when we buy into the lie that only “special” people can demonstrate world changing peace. Any one of us can go within and withdraw the overcoming power of peace from our hearts.
It is interesting to note that all the religions in the world have similar peace prayers. I believe this proves that on a spiritual level we are all linked through our hearts to one another. We’re only warring with one another because we insist on relating to each other with our self-centered ego minds. Most of our wars are over religion, because it too has been degraded to mental dogmas instead of spiritual heart felt experiences. Like little children on the playground we are taunting each other with “My God’s better than your god!” Mental religion is contentious and spiritual religion is peaceful.
The core message of all the world religions is to love the Creator with all one’s heart, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself. It is an individual experience, generated from the inside out. We will never have peace ON earth until we have peace IN earth – our own earthen vessels. We must put the man together before we can hope to see the world come together. Each of us needs to take responsibility to do our part to clean up our own lives so they demonstrate as much peace as possible. It takes courage to look within our hearts and weed out the hatred, bitterness, resentments, and fears. But it beats literally going to war in our homes or abroad.
We have been gifted everything we need to put the right pieces of ourselves together and discard the misshapen pieces that don’t fit the peaceful souls we truly are. Like the world puzzle, we become one piece of peace that fits perfectly into the whole.
