Spirals of Response vs. Circles of Reaction October 15, 2009

The spiral shape tends to inspire feelings of openness, freedom and adventure. It appears full of possibility. The circle on the other hand, is a closed system. Whatever you start with you finish with, so there isn’t opportunity for new adventure or imagination.

Circles are very useful, however, which is why they are pervasive in our culture. We have countless variations of the wheel serving all manner of utilitarian purposes. Our Newtonian science is based on the circle of cause and effect, action and reaction in a continuous circle. We don’t seem to have much use for spirals on the material plane of life because it is open ended.

When we use the circle of reaction method in relationships with others and nature itself, it shows itself to be inadequate in dealing with the complexities of life. This is evident in all the conflicts in the world today, which are fueled by individuals and nations in continuous circles of reaction to each other. The old Hatfield’s and McCoy’s feud lives on in different costumes.

It seems to be time to use an expanded paradigm of thinking and relating to each other and the world at large. By opening the circle into a spiral, we give ourselves the opportunity to respond instead of react. What is the difference? REACT means ‘to act in return or opposition or towards a former state’ (like a circle). RESPOND means ‘to answer’ (more open).

Reactions are mostly automatic, like a knee-jerk reaction to stimulus. It is just “a happening”; and therefore, we don’t feel we have any control over it. However, in truth, we do have control and we do have a choice; but we don’t apply it to situations in which our buttons are pushed. Someone attacks us physically or verbally and a primal reaction is triggered. Our society has always condoned reacting by striking back in like kind– no questions asked.

Responding, or answering, on the other hand implies taking time between the initial action and the answer or response. This newly created time space offers opportunity for processing information by listening to the other. It lends a feeling of open-mindedness to consider various alternatives to raw reaction. We have time and space to possibly “walk in the other’s shoes” for a few moments, which would enable one to see a different point of view. This in turn could lead to an understanding of why the other did or said what they did. With understanding comes a space for cooperation, and even compassion in some cases.

A good example of responding is found in the practice of non-violent communication. which uses the “Jack in the Box” method of communication. This is how it works. You place your order at the drive-thru speaker box. Jack responds by repeating what you ordered. Then you respond by affirming whether or not they heard you right. If not, you continue the interaction until you know that Jack in the Box fully understands your order.

If Jack simply ‘reacted’ to your order by giving it to the cook without verifying it with you, your order could possibly be wrong about half of the time. Jack’s owners learned this early on and chose to respond instead of react. They didn’t want employees assuming they understood what the customer said. Assuming is a huge problem with reaction as it is based solely on one’s individual limited perception of the situation regardless of what others are saying or doing.

Do you agree that we need to learn how to change from circles of reaction to be able to flow into spirals of response? To be able to respond we must learn to listen to others with our heart instead of reacting to words with our biased minds. Try this simple exercise. Listen with your heart to your spouse, children, co-workers, fellow students for just one day. Don’t interrupt anyone by talking over them. Just listen. Take a breath. Wait and feel if you need to respond verbally. Many times you will find there’s no need to say anything. Simply by listening with your heart, they felt heard and seen. Your spiral of response has opened up an infinite world of possibilities.

IS IT ABSOLUTELY TRUE? September 18, 2009

We are always taking in information from everywhere, including our own repetitious thoughts, and most of it isn’t even true. If that weren’t bad enough, we act on that information blindly accepting the information as true. Then we process it by judging the information as good or bad, useful or worthless.

Acting on thoughts about information that may or may not be true is the cause of 99% of the suffering in our world. We are fabulous story tellers, and we weave epic stories that would make Hollywood jealous. We have a novel in our heads about who we are, who are parents are and what they did to us, about the world and what it is doing to us, and why or why not we can’t do anything to change it.

If we could stop ourselves for a few moments, jump out of the squirrel cage of our “monkey minds” and ask ourselves one question: “Is it true? Can I absolutely know it is true?” we would be shocked at what our answer would be. That’s because the answer would be “NO.”

We are all reluctant to admit that because: 1. We love to be right all the time; and 2. We can’t justify our feelings if they are based on a falsehood. If someone treats us badly in our opinion, we can think they don’t love us or they want to hurt us. Unless we come right out and tell them how we feel and ask them why they acted a certain way, we just believing our own very subjective thoughts. We ignore the fact that we’re the only ones that can make ourselves feel anything by the stories we tell ourselves.

Once I acknowledge that maybe the story I’m telling myself isn’t true, I open a whole new paradigm of possibilities as to what may be the truth in the situation. Many times we find out that someone’s behavior towards us had nothing at all to do with us. It’s possible they weren’t feeling good or they had just had some bad news. Unless we ask the person how they are feeling or what they are thinking, we can only assume. We when do that we make “an ass out of you and me”.

“To thine own self be true.” and “Know thyself.” are famous quotes. We TRULY can only know ourselves, which takes most of us a lifetime! So asking ourselves if something is true or not as we go along judging everything in our lives, can be a life saving and life changing tool. It literally changes the whole dynamic between people.

When we assume we know what another is thinking or believing, we react to them based on our beliefs. We project onto them the feeling of anger or hurt, which then elicits a negative response from them. This is turn fuels our belief that they have something against us; and on and on it escalates. We can see this happening on an individual level and community or world level. We aren’t asking the right questions and few, if any, are listening for any answers!

In fact, we rarely actually listen to ourselves let alone others. I personally believe this is the reason for all the conflict in the world. We’re rarely in silence. Wisdom always speaks in whispers. We can’t hear ourselves think. We’re acting on automatic pilot at warp speed. It becomes easy to make snap judgments about others and ourselves. We don’t stop to feel the effects of these judgments. Too time consuming, we think. So we stuff them into our backs or necks or digestive tracks.

Wouldn’t it be easier and healthier to catch the toxic process at the beginning when something happens that we don’t like or that makes us unhappy? Couldn’t we stop and ask, “Is it true?” Then wait long enough to hear the answer. If it isn’t true, keep questioning it until a satisfying more truthful answer surfaces. The answer is waiting within each of us. Ask and it will answer, but we must be still to hear it’s whisper. The truth will set us free, but we must have the courage to ask for it and the time to receive it.

Remember this charming song from several years ago? Our world was in a bit of mess then too, but not nearly as seriously as now. It’s a little harder today to sing this little tune and pump oneself up. However, it does convey a universal truth that will work if we work it.

We’ve had movies like The Secret that explain a Law of Attraction in our Universe, which teach us how and why people and things show up in our lives. We attract what we think about, or we attract what we love by paying attention to it. And yes, it’s true that some of us love drama and problems and chaos, even though we don’t like to admit it.

Of course, none of us is doing a jig over the financial mess. Most of us feel pretty helpless when it comes to doing anything to help correct it. But that aside, we can take responsibility for our own attitude moment to moment regardless of the outside circumstances. In fact, controlling ourselves is all we can do.

So with that in mind I would like to share a little something I stumbled upon from one of the internet sites I visit frequently called A Space of Love hosted by Heather Mcauley. Years before The Secret appeared on the scene, Heather taught her five year old daughter, Amelia, to imagine whatever she wanted to have or do as if it was already real. Then she told her to stop thinking about it and just be happy and grateful. Amelia’s been manifesting trips, horses, and all types of fun for the past several years. Now around age twelve Heather asked her what she would advise adults who are “freakin’ out” over lack of money.

She said that instead of “freakin’ out” about a lack, picture what you want and imagine it like it’s happening. Then don’t think about it. Go about doing your normal thing and be happy. If it doesn’t work it’s because it depends on what you think will work for you. (We’re back to you are and have what you believe).

Next you should empty your mind, focus on what you want and not worry at all. You can meditate to help empty your mind. Do the normal things you do, and don’t worry about it. Be happy and picture yourself with money, but not a whole house full of money. Then people may come in try to steal it!

When asked if she pictured herself with money, she said “No. I pictured myself going to Disneyland and stuff like that”.

Amelia went on to say that if you have a child, you might want to play with him or her for awhile. There is something about children. They can feel upset if their parents are preoccupied and not there for them. She concluded with these words of encouragement:
“Love is the strongest thing in the world. It makes people feel good, it makes them feel better, and it always brings happiness, no matter how sad you are, knowing that you’re loved.”

Out of the mouths of babes comes great wisdom. Speaking of wisdom, Albert Einstein is known to have said “Imagination is more important than knowledge”. He ought to know. His imagination brought us the theory of relativity that changed the world forever! He also said “Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.”

There is another internet person who is storming the world with what he calls Mind Movies. He teaches you how to make a movie of your imagined life so you can literally watch your dreams come to life in your very own movie. You obviously are happy, excited and enthused while watching your movie; and therefore, the joyful feelings crowd out worry and fear. Then, guess what. Yep, you guessed it. Money, love, peace and joy begin to manifest in your life, just like it did for Amelia. So you can sing, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy”.

You can go high tech or low tech, but do indulge yourself in your delightful imagination and partake of life’s “coming attractions” NOW.

The Present is Pre-Sent June 23, 2009

Now that is quite a wild statement. But think about it for a moment…or two. If our present moment is pre-sent, who sent it? And why should I care? I have enough to think about without questioning where the present came from and who sent it. Good grief!

Though it feels like a silly conundrum of confusion, it is really a profound thought, which if pondered for awhile will lead to a liberating revelation.

We are living on the surface of a infinitely enormous mystery. Our bodies alone are so complex we haven’t even begun to figure them out or identify all the components. Each one of us in a magnificent universe unto ourselves. We are actually a hologram and everything we experience is a holographic image as well. As you know they can clone something from just one cell. This in itself is mind boggling.

What does this mean in your everyday life? It means that if you live your life as if this material world is all there is; you will be very confused and discouraged most of the time. Remember, the material world around us is only about 1% of reality. The remaining 99% is unseen by human eyes. Can you imagine deciding anything in your life with only 1% of the necessary information? I think not. And yet, we do it all the time.

Experts tell us that we only use about 10% of our brain power. The other 90% is just sitting there doing nothing. Why is that!? I would think that would really upset people. I would think they would want to know immediately, if not sooner, how to access that 90% so their life could be more manageable and enjoyable. However, for some unknown reason, we just go on with life as if we never even heard that incredible information.

Okay now. Back to the present. We hear a lot lately about being present, living in Presence, being here now, because NOW is all there is. But the NOW is a product of the past moment. If you were sad a moment ago, you are probably sad now. Therefore, you sent yourself a sad thought to be experienced in the future, which is now the present. So your “present” has been “pre-sent”. Get it?

We can have an incredibly rich life if we challenge ourselves to use the 90% of our minds to consciously create our future “present” moments by visioning in the current present what we want to feel and experience in the future present. This is the awesome gift of free will that distinguishes us from other species. We can co-create our future by choosing what we think about in the present!

Proverbs says that “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he”. It isn’t what other people think about you that determines who you are. What others think of you is none of your business! It’s their business. No one can make you think anything you don’t want or choose to think. Nor can you make anyone else think something they don’t want to think.

So why do we spend so much time and effort struggling to control others and our material world? If it is a losing game, why play it? Good question, don’t you think? Well, I believe we keep playing it because we are choosing to use the 10% of our minds to figure out the 1% of reality. Real life is going on subliminally in the 90% of our minds in the 99% of reality!

It does sound crazy doesn’t it? That’s because it is! Now that the whole world is turned inside out and everyone can see behind the curtain and they can see the emperor has no clothes, people are freaking out. “What in the world can we do?!” Nothing! We can only change our world by changing our perception using the 90%.

Ernest Holmes who wrote The Science of Mind said, “Change your thinking; change your life”. And he was right. Our thoughts are the steering wheel of our life vehicle. It’s time to wake up and enjoy the Present you Pre-sent yourself consciously.

There is a very wonderful video circulating the world on the internet. Many different people sing and play Stand By Me. Here is the link to tune in and watch as soon as you can. http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=2539741             Here are the lyrics:

When the night has come
And the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we’ll see
No I won’t be afraid
Oh I won’t be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

If the sky that we look upon
Should tumble and fall
Or the mountain should crumble to the sea
I won’t cry, I won’t cry
No I won’t shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me

Darlin’ darlin’ stand by me
Oh stand by me
Oh stand now, stand by me, stand by me

Whenever you’re in trouble just stand by me
Oh stand by me
Whoa stand now, oh stand, stand by me

Every one of us feels we can bear just about anything if we have someone standing by us that understand. As human beings we almost inherently know that we are not made to go it alone in this world. We are vitally connected to others.  In this current world which seems very fractured, it is very easy to become extremely distracted by a constant bombardment of media, technology and economic stressors. Since the media’s mantra is “If it bleeds, it leads.” we usually only hear of negative and destructive events happening around the world.

Our poor minds can’t tell the difference between what we see on TV and what we see in real life, so it reacts to everything in real time. Whatever the mind hears in present time it believes it is happening now. So when you tell a sad story about a past event, your mind relives it as if it is happening in the present as you’re speaking. Then it releases all the stress hormones to help cope with that problem. This is why it is so vital to censor what we allow into our minds. If all it sees and hears is horrible negative news, it will be easy to think the whole world is like the news stories. But it isn’t! There are millions of miraculous, loving, compassionate acts of kindness happening every second around the globe that we never hear about.
There is more proof all the time that we create what we focus on. If we focus on all the good in our lives and have an attitude of gratitude for the many parts that are good and working, then we will get more of those things. Keeping a gratitude journal is very helpful. Recording all the things that are a blessing in your life will dramatically alter your world view.
There are many positive affirmative videos like the one mentioned above as well as inspirational affirmations circulating on the internet that one can plug into everyday to get a lift and get going in the right direction. In a way, the internet is providing a way for all of us to STAND BY EACH OTHER. The Stand By Me video is awesome because the music and the words resonate so deeply within and we can feel connected to everyone.

The Universe is conspiring to teach us Compassionate Connection through these testing times. The world is especially polarized now with very little neutral ground to dabble around in. We are forced to make a choice for the light or the dark, the love or the fear. Every moment is an opportunity to choose which side we want to put our energy toward. Anything that helps us grow toward compassion and/or connection with others is sacred work.  When we stand by each other we are standing on holy ground.

Compassion means with passion and passion sometimes means suffering. We are with others in their suffering and that is what helps lighten the load. Jesus said this too. He said “Cast your cares on me, because I care for you”.  The Christ is within you and me and that is what we do… we stand by each other. We are to be the Good Samaritan for each other.

Play that video again and again until the joy of it just overflows.

HELLO! ANSWER ME! April 8, 2009

Hello!  Are you there?  I can’t hear you!  Please speak up. What are you doing? Have you drunk the Kool Aid? Honestly, I’m not kidding.

There are beautiful families breaking up all over this country because they have lost their “STUFF”!  This is absolutely horrible. During the past decade we have been hypnotized into believing our self worth was based on what we owned – real or personal property. We did everything to get it and maintain it. We worked at jobs we hated, we sacrificed time with our mates and children…all to get stuff and bigger and bigger houses and SUV’s. We’ve been manipulated like puppets to spend into oblivion.

Now the truth is out. The curtain exposing the charlatan wizard has been pulled back, and we are allowing ourselves to fall into despair. STOP! Yes stop! The system is corrupt. It has been for 5, 000 years. This is nothing new. I remember when we went through this kind of crap in the early 70’s. We had Vietnam (like Iraq), we had Watergate (like Wall Street) we had gas lines, toilet paper shortages even. Everything was unraveling. We’d just been through the 60’s with 3 major assinations of inspired leaders!  It was hell then too. But this chaos has been going on forever. There is nothing new under the sun, as they say.

So now we have young people too young to remember all this history; and, they no longer learn it in school. Since they have no sesnse of history, they think this is a new thing. They want to bail on all their commitments and just trash their families, because they can’t have the illusive “American Dream”. What the hell is that anyway???!!! Now is the time to pull together as never before.

We have been sold a bill of goods. The “powers that be” have never intentioned that the lower classes would be able to aspire to the heights. Their plan is “Give them a little here and there to keep them quiet.” Everyone loves bright and shiny toys, so we all got hooked real quickly into charging up the cards to get all the new gadgets and big screen TVs, etc. . In the process, you are kept so busy working to pay for all this stuff you forget who you are and you forget who your partner is, and you haven’t a clue who your kids are.

At this point we need Cicero (orator of Rome who warned of its fall) to stand up and tell it like it is. If all the “stuff” went away tomorrow what would we be? Do we still have each other? Do we still love our children with all our hearts? Do we still have our health? If you can answer “Yes” to those questions then you have it all. You can overcome this mess. It is all happening to teach us that we are so much more than our stuff.

If you look back on your life what are the most precious memories you have as a child? What about as a teenager? Keep going. Through your life, your memories are almost exclusively about love shared…those warm fuzzie feelings that linger forever in your heart.

Do not let this economy, this political crisis or corruption, the endless wars, destroy your indemonitable spirit. I am adamant about this! I have been through all of it, and I’m still here… and my relatives still speak to me! So if I can do it you can do it too. Love is all there is. Money and stuff mean nothing in comparison. Look in your loved ones faces and SEE them and tell them how much they mean to you and that you will do everything to maintain that unity.

Bless you.

THE ENERGY OF MONEY $$$ February 2, 2009

“With the measure you use, it will be measured to you – and even more. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.”  Jesus

Mark 4:24, 25 New International Bible

I always thought the second sentence of this passage spoken by Jesus to his followers seemed so harsh and even a bit cruel. Take away what little someone has? Why? That’s not fair. And as far as giving more to the already rich is even worse. But Jesus wasn’t cruel or harsh, so there must a deeper more spiritual meaning here.

Jesus taught in parables full of symbols and metaphors using the agricultural setting of his world at that time. Seeds are a symbol of our spirit and soil represents the environment in which we plant them. We can think of spirit and energy interchangeably. We plant our spirit in a nutrient rich (loving) soil, keep it weeded from care and strife, and the life energy in the seed grows into a living plant capable of producing additional seeds and plants.

This life force energy is within you too. If you don’t know you have it and that you are directing it, you will live way below your potential and risk getting caught in fear and lack. You won’t understand that your thoughts carry your energy out to infinity. Nor will you understand those thoughts can take root and produce your own heaven or hell depending on what you are “measuring out” to the world around you. Therefore, the most important lesson one can learn is to know oneself.

Knowing that you and everything has this life-force energy is the key. It doesn’t matter if it manifests as love or money or giraffes. It is the same energy manifesting in different forms. This may sound very extreme, but think about it for a moment. We aren’t just seeking physical money or loving people around us, we are seeking the energy money can buy, and the love that grows us spiritually and emotionally from our loved ones. You can sense the difference.

What happens when you meet people that reek of neediness for love or money? Most of us probably turn tail and run. Well, love and money run from us when we approach them from need and scarcity too. Jesus says that those who give from a needy, self-serving attitude will find what little they do have taken away.

But do we dare love money? After all, the Bible says, “The love of money is the root of all evil”. Here again we have to go to the symbolic, metaphorical meaning or our understanding can go sideways. Loving the materialistic aspect of money is the snare that is the root of evil. It is money for money’s sake because it destroys love. It always needs more and there is no end to more.

But when we love the energy or spirit of money, then that energy expands. It is then we demonstrate we are aware that money is a means of exchanging love, gratitude and appreciation for goods and services. To those who give from this attitude more will be given them.

Thankfully, there is a tremendous upsurge in awareness as to what is real in the world these days, as people are unclenching their fists and opening their hands in a spirit of cooperation and open-mindedness. We can now afford to move from a limiting poverty consciousness to abundance consciousness. We are aligning with the whole Universe which operates on the energy of abundance consciousness. Just look at Mother Nature. Does She ration only a certain number of leaves to the trees? No. They have an overabundance of leaves. Look at the Heavens? There are so many trillions of stars we can’t even count them. This same power of abundance is within you.

Try this. Begin to think of money as an energy of exchange that responds to love, gratitude and appreciation just as you do. Don’t chase it out of need or greed. Love and appreciate it. Let it chase you! How fun is that?

WE ARE ALL ADDICTS January 9, 2009

In a New Year we resolve to overcome our addictions because we judge them as bad; and we don’t believe we are really addicts. But that is not true. The truth is that we are all addicts, and all addictions aren’t bad. We shun the word “addiction” like the plague because we relate it to drugs and alcohol addictions that are so ugly and destructive. However, anything we give ourselves over to that becomes habitual is an addiction.

The way I see this whole addiction thing is that we are born addicted. We are addicted to 1. survival and 2. pleasure. Neither is harmful or bad. In fact they are a prerequisite for being human. We cannot be addiction free.  Our minds are pre-wired to habitually think and do the same things over and over. It isn’t built in to evaluate whether those thoughts or actions are good or bad, life threatening or life affirming. Remember, our mind is like our computer.

Addiction is one of the most powerful forces on Earth. Addiction to power and control has built empires and destroyed them. We are currently witnessing the destruction of our financial empire because of addiction to power and control by a select few. Sex addiction has ruined many relationships. Addiction to drama has cut many a life short because the human body isn’t made to live in a soap opera atmosphere every day. We all suffer from addiction to our mostly negative thinking that goes on incessantly. It is said that we think an average of 60,000 thoughts a day; but that 90% of them are the same thoughts we’ve had every day for years! How’s that for an addiction?

Twelve Step programs that help people overcome addictions start with step one, which is to admit that you are addicted to a harmful substance or pattern of behavior such as gambling or shopping. Only then can a person begin a process of transformation and healing. The primary focus remains on the admission that the person is an addict and will always have to “work” the program of recovery to remain free. In other words, they become addicted to healthy beliefs and behaviors.

If we are unaware that we can choose and change our thoughts we can end up being led into destructive habits, because we naturally seek pleasure, even if it’s bad for us. Then we further sabotage ourselves by thinking we can stop being addicts. We can no more stop that than we can stop thinking! We will always be addicts, but we can choose that to which we want to be addicted, and then consciously work to enforce and celebrate that.

For example, we can become obsessively addicted to thinking positive loving thoughts about ourselves and others. We can be addicted to gratitude and abundance. We can habituate ourselves to nutritious eating and healthy exercise. It takes at least 21 days to create a new habit pattern. But if after 21 days we get lazy and allow our old thinking pattern to run things, we have again deceived ourselves. We fall back into the old familiar addictions that have had years to embed themselves into every cell of our bodies. Our way out of this vicious cycle is in knowing the truth about our addictive human nature and using the power of addiction for our benefit instead of our harm.

We all hate having to admit we are addicts. We resist the whole idea, bury it in our subconscious and it grows like mold. Anything we resist persists. All the self help programs in the world work, but only if we work them each and every day. Armed with this knowledge we can take this built in power and use it to create a peaceful, joyful, abundant life. Before, you may not have realized you had the ability to use addiction power for good. You assumed any addiction was bad, no matter what form it took. You didn’t see the positive part of addiction which has been hiding in plain sight!

Begin this exciting New Year by resolving to use the power of addiction to create the life you want.

ORGASMIC LAUGHTER December 7, 2008

Have you ever noticed how deeply connected you feel to someone with whom you share a belly laugh? Can you imagine fighting or arguing with that person? If you are the one that caused the belly laugh in another you probably feel incredibly blessed because something you gave of yourself was received in another’s soul.

What is it about this deep laughter that creates a bridge between us, joining us on a higher level of oneness? I believe it is a gift of Divinity to the human soul. As far as we know no other living species has belly laughter. I think we could surmise that dogs and maybe cats smile, but I don’t think they laugh. Proverbs tells us that “laughter does us good as a medicine”.

Medical science tells us that orgasms make us healthier too. Hmmm.

Laughter is probably more accessible than orgasms for most of us; but almost as rare for many. Deep laughter could be the key to saving humanity from our current health and world conflict issues. What if we were to learn what different cultures found hilarious? Can you imagine how much more connected to them we would feel if we made them double over in laughter?

People are very open and vulnerable when they let go and laugh till they cry or wet their pants. You are never the same with the one who brought you to that state of release from your prison of self control. This is why I think it is like an orgasm. I’m not trying to downgrade sexual orgasms. Rather, I am trying to elevate our awareness of humor that heals.

It is said that when you share your body with another that you bond at a soul level with that person. Even if a relationship doesn’t last the two stay bonded. Orgasms are usually limited to two people whereas laughter is more inclusive.

In the case of laughter we can experience that orgasmic bond, because we drop our masks, open our hearts and meld together in ineffable joy. The joy is the overcoming power of the divinity within us. In that moment we become one. We feel love and appreciation for the immense release of energy the laughter created.

So why don’t we focus our creative minds on discovering hilarious topics to spring on each other to experience a spontaneous explosion of wholesome joy? It will help heal our bodies and it will diffuse anger and conflict. The best part is that it is free and there is no end to its availability.

CAN WE CHANGE? December 6, 2008

Now that we have successfully decided to CHANGE as a group, what is the next step? Changing a nation is a lot like changing a person. Number one…no one can change another person. Number two…the person needing change must really, really want to change. That means that they have decided what they are doing isn’t working for them anymore.

As a nation we have pretty much decided what we don’t want and what is not working for us anymore. The majority really want a change. But what do we want? It isn’t enough to know what we don’t want.

Most of us can conjure up long lists of what we don’t want and rattle it off without even trying. But when you ask someone, “What do you really want for your life?” or “What is your purpose for being here?” they glaze over. As a nation we could glaze over very easily because we haven’t focued our energy deeply into the issues of what we want this nation to look and feel like. We just know what we don’t like.

The new President cannot do all the heavy lifting himself. He can suggest ideas as to how to create wealth on Main Street, end wars, provide universal health care, etc. etc. But unless we take some time and ponder these issues ourselves and maybe even have discussions with friends and colleagues about them, nothing much will be created or change. We will slow the process for lasting change and maybe even get more of what we don’t want!

The icky issue is that each of us is a microcasm of the macrocasm, and that means we each have to solve the wars, economic failures, health issues and social glitches in our personal lives immediately if not sooner!  We expect Obama to ride in as a white knight and wave a wand and heal our critically ill nation/world like Merlin the magician. Not realistic. More wishful thinking.

I hate the fact that I have to take full responsibility for my life and the messes I have made. I have been waiting for Prince Charming, Robin Hood, The Rapture, you name it for decades. I want so badly to think that it really can happen – a miracle on 34th street or whatever. But the reality check is that I have to step up and answer “Present.”  Am I present? Am I aware? Am I conscious? Do I really SEE reality?

The curtain is down on the wizard. Toto (the dog whose name means your EVERYTHING) has pulled it down and exposed the fraud that has been masquarading as our American Dream Life. The shoot out at the OK corral has just finished. Now we as the townspeople or the Munchkins in Oz get to decide what and who we want to run the show. But we have been drunk on greed and materialism just as our leaders have been. We have to sober up, quickly!

We need to step up here and figure out what we want as individuals and what we want as towns and counties and states and nations. That means we probably have to spend less time in front of the TV. We may have to actually meet our neighbors and talk to them about what they want. Wow, what a concept!

In a way we are resurrecting the 60’s without LSD! If we had pulled the drug abuse out of the movement, it would have been exactly what we need today. The 1960’s was about being authentic, loving and aware.  What a great combination.

I am ecouraged by this mess we have in the US. (For those of you in other countries, I’m sorry you can’t be here in person for this party BUT you can join virtually!). We are on the brink of finding out just how fabulous and absolutely transcendent we really are. Amazing things are about to happen as we discover what we can do when we wake up and actually SEE each other.

I think I may have gone on too long for this post, but I will be back soon for more fun ideas as to how we can literally put Humpty Dumpty back together.  Yes we can!
